Front Porch to the Region's History

Geography defines East Tennessee as a land of mountains and valleys and with a history and heritage apart from the rest of the state. The East Tennessee Historical Society recognizes this distinctiveness with programs and exhibitions uniquely tailored to the region. This Day In East Tennessee History

  • December 8, 1860

    Unionist leaders easily passed resolutions at a meeting in Knoxville on this day in 1860 that condemned secession as illegal and unnecessary, asserted the constitutionality of Lincoln's election, and urged a compromise of the issues dividing North and South and the preservation of the Union.
